Applying for education roles: safeguarding and DBS basics

What candidates can expect when an education employer needs safer-recruitment information, references and a DBS check.

Expect role-specific checks

Schools, trusts, colleges and agencies may need to confirm identity, employment history, qualifications, references and suitability to work with children. The exact checks depend on the role and setting.

A DBS check is one part of safer recruitment

Different levels of DBS check reveal different information and not every role is eligible for every level. The recruiting organisation should explain the level required and the process. A DBS certificate is issued to the applicant, and employers may ask to see it.

  • Keep names and address history accurate and consistent.
  • Do not upload a full DBS certificate to a public profile.
  • State your current DBS or Update Service status accurately.
  • Ask the employer if you are unsure which evidence is required.

Show safeguarding awareness in your application

Use relevant examples that demonstrate professional boundaries, reporting concerns, record keeping, inclusion and working with colleagues or families. Never include confidential details that could identify a child or vulnerable person.
