Teacher of English

We are seeking a strong and ambitious Teacher of English who wants to make a lasting difference for young people with SEMH. This is an opportunity to teach English within a specialist through-school where relationships, high expectations and excellent teaching are understood as mutually reinforcing.

English has a central place in Orion’s curriculum. The successful candidate will teach reading, writing, spoken language and English across the Academy’s phases, supporting students to build the knowledge, fluency, confidence and qualifications that open doors to future learning and adulthood.

Our curriculum spans Key Stages 2-5 and is organised through Discover, Develop and Futures. Depending on student need and pathway, English provision may include the Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 National Curriculum, phonics and reading intervention, GCSE English Language and Literature, Functional Skills and Entry Level qualifications. Teaching is adapted intelligently for SEND and SEMH without lowering ambition.

• Explicit teaching of reading, writing, vocabulary and oracy across English lessons.
• High expectations combined with reasonable adjustment and responsive teaching for individual SEND and SEMH needs.
• A relational, trauma-informed and inclusive culture in which predictable routines support readiness to learn.
• Careful use of assessment to identify gaps, adapt teaching and demonstrate progress.
• Close collaboration with colleagues so literacy and communication are strengthened across the wider curriculum.

• Know students well, including their EHCP outcomes, strengths, barriers and strategies that support successful learning.
• Plan and teach purposeful, well-sequenced lessons with clear learning, appropriate challenge and strong subject content.
• Create calm, predictable classrooms through positive relationships, consistent routines and high expectations.
• Use adaptive teaching rather than lowering curricular ambition, ensuring students can access and succeed within challenging learning.
• Teach reading, writing, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and spoken language explicitly and accurately.
• Use assessment, feedback and student work to identify what has been learned, what needs revisiting and what should happen next.
• Contribute positively to curriculum development, professional learning, quality assurance and the wider life of the Academy.
